"What do you carry in your shooting bag, can you cover your needs if something gets stuck or broken"?

We receive this question over and over again from the new shooter to Ol' Abe, all trying to lighten their load and still be able to care for their rifle. Many will have different ideas, some are good while others you'll find questionable, that's personal preference. Here's what I carry for the rifle and for the shotgun, just the basic things that work.

SHOOTIN’ (rifle) POUCH

 

(1) Shooting pouch (Longhunter Leather Co. bark tan pouch);

(1) roll of pillow ticking.

(1) horn powder measurer w/bullet board.

(1) flint wallet (6) flints = hand forged pliers, lady legs (ramrod puller), comb tool w/sheath.

(1) leather bag = gentlemen’s knife, bone short starter, piece of brain tanned leather for holding flint in jaws, buckeye (luck), sm. box-(jag, worm, tools), sm. tube-(tow), sm. rd. wooden box-lube.

(1) leather bag = flint knapper, pan brush, forged vent pick, Wood’s flint shaper, sm. period bottle of lube.

(1) Powder horn w/bark tan sling.

(1) small bag w/buckshot.

(1) small bag w/round ball.

(1) sm. bag w/shot wads, thick & thin cards.

(1) comb. Powder/shot measurer.

(1) small bag w/buckshot.

(1) small bag w/round ball.

(1) flint wallet (6) flints = hand forges pliers, lady legs (ramrod puller), comb tool w/sheath.

(1) leather bag = folding knife, short starter, piece of brain tanned leather for holding flint in jaws, buckeye (luck), sm. box-(jag, worm, tools), sm. tube-(tow), sm. rd. wooden box-lube.

(1) leather bag = flint knapper, pan brush, forged vent pick, Wood’s flint shaper, sm. period bottle of lube.

Separate pouch

A small oak tanned leather shot pouch w/swan shot.

(1) leather sling w/long wangs (used for throwing stones to move small game).

     (1) Powder horn w/bark tan sling.

WEAPONS carried  

 

(1) 28 ga Early Wilson Chief’s gun w/cover - carried w/wiping stick.

(1) 16 ga Early English SXS flinter w/cover - carried w/wiping stick.
