APPLICATION FOR APPRENTICE MEMBERSHIP

Welcome to what we hope will be a rewarding and life-long journey, a journey into our past and the skills that kept our forebears alive. Membership in the North American Frontiersmen is a reward available to those of good character and stout heart who are willing to aim at a high target. Our Association stands on three legs - Fellowship, Survival Skills, and Historical Preservation. In order to sustain these ideals, we carefully screen those whom we invite to join our ranks. You are starting down a path in which you will be asked to demonstrate a good deal of willingness and patience. The trail will not be easy, and success will depend on your ability to carry your own weight and cooperate with fellow members, but virtually anyone can succeed if they have the right attitude.

The North American Frontiersmen is not a rich manís club, and operates entirely on volunteer efforts with a minimum of expense. However, as in the old days, it will be necessary for you to make or procure the various items necessary for survival in the wilderness. A good part of your training will be in the use and maintenance of these tools and techniques.

The specific requirements that Apprentices must meet are found in our Bylaws and copied below. However, your Sponsor is the living voice of the Association, and should help you understand and fulfill these requirements in a manner that will do you credit.

NAF Bylaws, Article IV

Requirements for Apprentice (Probationary) Membership

A. Membership in this association is by invitation only.

B. Prospects shall be sponsored by at least two Woodsman members, or one Mountaineer member.

C. To be accepted as Apprentice, the prospect must be at least 18 years old, and demonstrate interest and motivation during at least two outings with at least one sponsor, whose letter of recommendation with properly filled out application, and fees as shown, shall be sent to the Captain who shall present it to the Council of Elders for approval.

D. The Apprentice must own and demonstrate safe use of a period firearm or bow suitable for the gathering of food as well as defense, and must have a basic period outfit (clothing, knife, fire kit, bedroll, personal effects).

E. The Apprentice must complete the requirements for Woodsman membership within two years or be dropped. Requests for extension must be for good cause; the sponsor shall provide a written explanation and obtain approval from the Council of Elders.

F. Good sponsorship is crucial to the well-being of any invitational association. Sponsors are fully and personally responsible for upholding, demonstrating, and teaching the traditions and standards of the Association, and should ensure that each prospect receives full attention. Their certification that a prospect is suitable and ready for advancement is a solemn responsibility.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY.

In applying for membership, I confirm my understanding that Association activities are inherently risky, involving the use of period and primitive tools and equipment, and include dangers from black-powder firearms, livestock, and watercraft used in remote areas that may not offer rescue services. I agree to take full and personal responsibility for my actions, exercising all reasonable precautions to avoid injuring myself or others, and avoiding risks which I do not feel comfortable undertaking. I understand that the Association is not a legal entity and has no assets, and its activities are voluntary gatherings of individuals who assume no legal responsibility for the safety of other members. MEMBERíS RESPONSIBILITY TO REMAIN ACTIVE

The North American Frontiersman does not charge annual dues, relying only on sign-up fees to meet its minimal expenses. It is therefore the responsibility of each member to remain in contact with the Association, either online, via other members or officers, or by mail, and ensure that their address on the Roster is up to date. Otherwise the member may miss notices of events and elections. Members that do not respond to mailings may be marked inactive and may not receive further notices. This situation can only be corrected by the lost member contacting the Association, updating their address as required, and remaining responsive to future notices.
