Smoke Signals

In the "Edibles" column we have provided a list of what was available. Those that like to grow their own asked if there was a way to cross-reference "correct period cultivated edibles" to what is available today, well here you go folks.

In a future issue we will cover "foraged edibles" with an article that one of our members and yours truly worked on together. With this information you'll have a complete shopping list, then we'll tell you how to prepare your edibles with period recipes.

We told you we would try and get you started in the right direction for being "period correct" for this years list of events.

For those interested in growing your own cultivated edibles we have provided you with a list of "Heirloom Seeds" along with a cross-reference guide to a known supplier.  There are a number of nursery suppliers of grains, plants and other period edible seeds. We use GURNEY’S SEED & NURSERY CO because they have worked with us in the past to try and provide us with the closet modern seed to the original item we have shown.

CROSS REFERENCE - SEEDS & GRAINS OF TODAY COMPARED TO THEIR COUNTERPARTS OF YESTERDAY.

(This was as close as a group of period growers could come to correct "Heirloom Seeds" using Thomas Jefferson’s book and records from other known fanciers of cultivated edibles of the time in the New World).
